Welcome
VEKTOR is a vector synthesis editor for the Kurzweil K2700. Four sounds sit at the corners of a square, and a point inside it sets how much of each you hear. Move the point and the sound moves between them: the point can orbit, travel a looped path, follow a 64-step score, or follow your hands.
VEKTOR makes no sound of its own. Each corner is one of your K2700's keymaps, and every patch becomes a real K2700 program: four VAST layers, their mix driven by the K2700's own LFOs, envelopes and CC sequencer. The app sends every change to the K2700 over USB as you make it, stores finished programs on it and reads them back. A stored program moves by itself on the instrument, with no computer attached.
- Four corners. Any of the K2700's 964 factory keymaps in each, with tune, fine, pan and level, an LP, HP or BP filter with its own envelope, and the amp's attack and release.
- Four motions. LIVE, PATH, ORBIT and SCORE, drawn on the big display as the point moves.
- Speed. The orbit's speed by the mod wheel, by an envelope, or both.
- Effects. One factory insert chain (EQ, presence, a dual chorus, a flanger and a ping-pong delay, each on the K2700's own buttons, sliders and knobs) and a recital-hall reverb from 1 to 46.6 seconds.
- 64 factory programs, 32 warm pads in motion and 32 pads of every kind.
Getting started
What you need
- A Mac with macOS 12 or later for the app, or Chrome or Edge on a computer for the web version (see In your browser).
- A Kurzweil K2700 and a USB cable to its USB COMPUTER port. VEKTOR needs it: without the K2700 there is no sound.
First sounds
- Connect the K2700, switch it on, put it in Program mode and select MIDI channel 1 on it.
- Open VEKTOR. It starts on 001 WARM VECTOR.
- Press LINK (top right). Its light blinks while it connects and stays on once the K2700 answers; the
display's bottom line then reads
LINKand the K2700's version. - Play the K2700's keyboard, or press PLAY under the display: it plays a chord on the K2700 and starts the point moving on the display.
- Step through the factory programs with PROGRAM ◀ ▶.
- Turn a knob: drag up or down, or use the mouse wheel. Hold Shift for fine steps; double-click a knob to return it to its starting value.
Every change goes to the K2700's edit buffer at once, but nothing is kept until you STORE it on the K2700: VEKTOR itself keeps no files (see Programs).
The reverb is heard once the K2700 is on a VEKTOR program stored on it, with channel 1 selected on its panel: until then it plays the reverb and delay of the program it was on. STORE a program and the K2700 selects it (see Which effects you hear).
The panel at a glance
| Area | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Header | The program's LEVEL, the REVERB and its TIME, FX (the insert chain's page), PROGRAM ◀ ▶, SCAN, READ, STORE and LINK. |
| CORNER A … D | The four sounds, each module where its corner is: C top left, D top right, A bottom left, B bottom right (see The corners). |
| The display | The square with the point, the program and the mode's values, the corners' shares; six soft keys under it and three EDIT encoders (see The display). |
| MOTION | LIVE, PATH, ORBIT, SCORE, and the mix law switch. |
| SPEED | SPEED, MAX SPEED, MOD WHEEL, SPEED ENV and ENV EDIT (see Speed). |
| VECTOR | The joystick and REC. |
| Top bar | The panel's finish (silver, titanium, black or blue: only the look changes) and an on-screen mod wheel that moves the orbit's speed on the display (the K2700's own wheel moves it on the instrument). |
The corners' colours are the same everywhere: A amber, B red, C blue, D green.
The corners
Each corner is one layer of the program. Its small display shows the keymap's name, then its ID, the TUNE, the filter type and the cutoff.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| KEYMAP | the 964 factory keymaps | An endless knob: turn it to step through the K2700's keymaps; with Shift, 20 at a time. |
| TUNE | −24 … +24 semitones | |
| FINE | −100 … +100 cents | Detune one corner against another for width. |
| PAN | L64 … centre … R63 | |
| LEVEL | −30 … +6 dB | The corner's level in the mix, before the point shares it out. |
| FILTER | LP, HP, BP | The button steps through a 2-pole lowpass, a 2-pole highpass and a bandpass. The cutoff follows the keyboard at half the key's pitch (50 cents a key). |
| CUTOFF | 20 Hz … 20 kHz | |
| RESO | 0 … 24 dB | The resonance. On BP it sets the band's width instead: about 2.8 octaves at 0, half an octave at 24. |
| FLT ENV | −72 … +72 semitones | How far the filter envelope moves the cutoff, up or down (up to six octaves). |
| FLT ATT, FLT DEC | 2 ms … 30 s; 20 ms … 30 s | The filter envelope: with every note the cutoff travels by FLT ENV over FLT ATT, then comes back over FLT DEC, while the key is held. |
| AMP ATT, AMP REL | 2 ms … 10 s; 20 ms … 20 s | The corner's own fade-in and release. |
| MUTE | on, off | Silences the corner. It is stored with the program. |
| SOLO | on, off | Hear one corner (or several) alone while you edit. SOLO is never stored: STORE writes the program as if no corner were soloed. |
A corner may hold any keymap: a synth wave, a choir, a string section, a bell. Corners that differ in colour (a bright one against a dark one, a sustained one against a breathy one) make the motion easiest to hear.
The display, soft keys and EDIT encoders
On the left of the display is the square: the corners' letters at its corners, the point, and what moves it (the path, the orbit, the score's gesture or the crosshair of LIVE). The loudest corner's letter is boxed; a muted one is struck through.
On the right: the program's number and name on the first line, the mode and its values, a bar for each corner's
share of the mix, and a status line. Without the LINK the status line shows the mix law, the mix's level against a
single corner in dB, and FUN 2/4, the number of the K2700's function generators the patch needs in a
layer (four at most; see Working with the K2700). With the LINK on, it shows the LINK and the
K2700's version.
Each change shows its value for a moment on the first lines. The six soft keys and the three EDIT encoders do what the display's bottom line names: it changes with the mode and the page. The EDIT encoders are endless; with Shift they move in quarter steps.
The display also has three pages of its own: the speed envelope (ENV EDIT), the effects (FX) and the K2700's programs (SCAN, READ, STORE). EXIT returns to the square.
The mix and the vector
The point's position, x from left to right and y from bottom to top, shares the sound between the corners: at a corner you hear only that corner, in the middle all four equally, on an edge the two at its ends. Each corner's share is applied by its layer on the K2700, so the mix happens inside the instrument, note by note.
The mix law
The switch under MOTION chooses how the shares become levels.
- K2700 (up): equal power. The K2700's own crossfade law. Along the edges the level stays even; towards the middle it dips, about 2 dB lower at the very centre than at a corner. Between unlike sounds this is seldom heard.
- FLAT (down): flat centre. Lifts the middle of the square by those 2 dB, for corners that are alike (four saws, four string sections) where the dip would be heard. It costs two more function generators.
LIVE
The point follows your hands.
- The joystick in the VECTOR section: drag its ball.
- The display: click or drag anywhere in the square.
- EDIT 1 and EDIT 2 move x and y; CENTER puts the point in the middle.
- The K2700's Slider 1 and Slider 2 move x and y (MIDI CC 12 and 13). A stored LIVE program plays from the sliders on the K2700 alone; with the LINK on, the sliders also move the point on the panel.
Touching the joystick or the sliders switches the patch to LIVE. With the LINK on, every move of the point is sent to the K2700 as CC 12 and 13.
REC: a gesture into a path
Press REC (it blinks), move the joystick, press REC again (it stops by itself after 20 seconds). VEKTOR turns the gesture into a PATH: the corner nearest to where you began becomes the start, and the four points and their times that follow your hand most closely, on the K2700's own time steps. The display then shows the path with your gesture dotted under it, and how far the path is from it on average.
PATH
Each note starts the point at a corner and sends it through four points, each reached in its own time. The K2700 plays it with two envelopes (ENV2 for x, ENV3 for y), so every note has its own journey.
| Key or encoder | What it does |
|---|---|
| ◄PT, PT► | Choose the point (1 … 4). You can also grab a point on the display and drag it. |
| EDIT 1, EDIT 2 | The chosen point's x and y. |
| EDIT 3 | Its time: how long the point takes to get there from the one before, 20 ms … 60 s on the K2700's envelope steps. |
| START | The corner every note starts from: A, B, C or D. |
| LOOP | What happens after point 4 while the keys are held: OFF (the point stays at 4), 4>1, 4>2 or 4>3 FW (back to that point and round again), or 4<>S, 4<>1, 4<>2 BID (back and forth between point 4 and the start corner, point 1 or point 2). |
| REL / HOLD | Without a loop, switches the points being edited between the four held ones and three release points (R1 … R3, a time of OFF leaves one out). |
| PLAY / KEY UP | Plays the chord and runs the path on the display; KEY UP lets go. |
SPEED divides every time: at ×2 the whole path runs twice as fast, at ×0.5 half as fast.
When you let go of the keys, the K2700 holds the point where it is: plan the path so that place sounds right while the notes ring out. The release points are kept with the program, but the K2700 does not play them.
ORBIT
The point goes round and round, driven by the K2700's LFO 1 (x) and LFO 2 (y).
| Encoder | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| EDIT 1: RATE | 0.01 … 24 Hz | Turns a second, on the K2700's LFO steps. SPEED multiplies it. |
| EDIT 2: RADIUS | 0.125, 0.25, 0.375, 0.5 | The orbit's size: 0.5 touches the square's edges. A smaller one keeps all four corners in the sound; it costs two function generators. |
| EDIT 3: LFO2 PHASE | 0, 90, 180, 270° | The orbit's shape: 90 a circle, 270 a circle the other way, 0 a line from A to D and back, 180 a line from C to B. |
The display's lines show the rate now and its range (from the slowest to the fastest the speed controls allow)
and what moves it: CTL NONE, WHEEL, ENV2 or both. PLAY and STOP run the orbit
with a chord.
SCORE
A gesture of 64 steps, played by the K2700's own CC sequencer: one lane for x, one for y, a step at each note value at the program's tempo, smoothed into one flowing movement.
| Encoder | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| EDIT 1: TEMPO | 20 … 300 BPM | The program's tempo, which the steps run at. SPEED multiplies it. |
| EDIT 2: SMOOTH | 0 … 1 | How much the steps are smoothed: 0 jumps from step to step, more glides more slowly between them. |
The display draws the gesture and its fourth line names the note value (1/32, 1/16, 1/8 or 1/4). The SCORE factory programs each bring their own gesture and note value; a patch switched to SCORE from another mode uses the panel's own gesture. The score starts again from its first step when you play after every key has been let go.
The K2700's edit buffer does not carry the CC sequencer. While you edit with the LINK on, the app plays the 64 steps to the K2700 itself (as CC 20 and 31, at the tempo). Once the program is stored, the K2700 plays them on its own.
Speed
SPEED rescales every motion: the times of PATH, the rate of ORBIT and the tempo of SCORE (×0.25 … ×4). The rest of the section moves the orbit's speed while you play, so it works in ORBIT only: in another mode, MOD WHEEL and SPEED ENV blink to say the K2700 cannot use them there.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| SPEED | The base speed, ×0.25 … ×4. |
| MAX SPEED | How much faster the orbit runs with the mod wheel up or the speed envelope at the top: ×1 … ×8. |
| MOD WHEEL | The K2700's mod wheel speeds up the orbit, from SPEED to MAX SPEED. The bar's on-screen wheel does the same on the display. |
| SPEED ENV | Steps through off, ONE SHOT (the envelope runs once with each note) and LOOP (it cycles while the keys are held). With the wheel on too, the two add up. |
| ENV EDIT | Opens the speed envelope's page (and switches the envelope on in a loop if it was off). |
The speed envelope
The envelope is the K2700's ENV2 in every layer. Its seven segments are three attacks (A1 … A3), a decay (D1, whose level is held while the keys are down) and three releases (R1 … R3). Each has a time and a level: 0 % is the orbit's base rate, 100 % its MAX SPEED.
- Drag a point: up and down sets its level, left and right its time (to the far left, off).
- ◄SEG and SEG► choose a segment; EDIT 1 its level, EDIT 2 its time, EDIT 3 another segment.
- LOOP chooses where the loop goes back to (A1, A2 or A3), forwards (FW) or back and forth (BID). COUNT sets how many times: INF, or 1 … 31.
- PLAY runs it with a chord and shows where the envelope is.
As with PATH, the K2700 holds the envelope where it is when the keys are let go; a looping envelope has no release.
Level and effects
In the header
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| LEVEL | −30 … +24 dB | The whole program's level, over the corners' own levels. The factory programs and INIT open at 0 dB. The K2700's VOLUME slider is still the master volume. |
| REVERB | 0 … 100 % | The send to the recital-hall reverb. It is heard when the K2700 is on a stored VEKTOR program (see Which effects you hear). |
| TIME | 1 … 46.6 s | The reverb's decay, in the seconds the K2700 plays (measured on the K2700). |
| FX | Opens the insert chain's page on the display. |
The insert chain
Every program has the K2700's factory chain 2744 in its insert: a 5-band EQ, a presence enhancer, a dual chorus, a flanger and a ping-pong delay, in that order. The page shows them in a row, lit while they are on.
- ◄FX and FX► choose a part; ON / OFF switches it; the EDIT encoders set its values.
- On the EQ, FREQ swaps the three gains for the three frequencies (and GAIN back).
- On the other parts, BYPASS takes the whole chain out (and INSERT puts it back).
Every value is also one of the K2700's own controls, so a stored program can be played and changed on the instrument alone:
| Part | On / off | Values (EDIT 1, 2, 3) |
|---|---|---|
| EQ | Button 1 | BASS Knob 1, MID Knob 2, TREBLE Knob 4; FREQ: BASS FREQ CC 70, MID FREQ Knob 3, TREB FREQ CC 78 |
| PRESENCE | Button 2 | on or off only |
| CHORUS | Button 7 | AMOUNT Slider 7, RATE Knob 7 |
| FLANGER | Button 6 | AMOUNT Slider 6, PERIOD Knob 6 (in beats) |
| DELAY | Button 8 | AMOUNT Slider 8, TIME Knob 8 (the right echo at the time, the left at twice it, in beats), FEEDBACK Pad 1 |
The flanger's period and the delay's times are in beats of the tempo the K2700 runs at: set it on the K2700's TEMPO page (the factory programs were made at 120 BPM). Every factory program opens with the reverb at 60 % and 8 seconds and a slow, wide chorus.
Programs
PROGRAM ◀ ▶
Steps through 000 INIT VECTOR (a plain patch to start from) and the 64 factory programs, 001 … 064 (see The factory programs). Loading one replaces the panel; anything not stored is lost.
SCAN, READ, STORE
The three buttons in the header (or the same soft keys on the page) work on the K2700's USER programs from 4096 to 4223.
- SCAN reads the list from the K2700: V marks a VEKTOR program, a dot any other program, and
-- EMPTY --a free ID. Choose one with ▲ ▼, an EDIT encoder or a click. - READ opens the chosen VEKTOR program on the panel, field by field: what was changed on the K2700's own panel (a keymap, a filter, a time) comes back with it. Programs that VEKTOR did not make cannot be read.
- STORE writes the panel into the chosen ID under the program's name. Press it twice: the first press asks
(
STORE TO 4098?, orOVERWRITE 4100?when the ID is taken) and the second, within three seconds, writes. VEKTOR reads the program back to check it, then selects it on the K2700 (on channel 1), so the K2700 plays it with its own reverb; the display saysSTORED 4098andSELECTED ON CH 1. SOLO is left out.
Without the LINK the page shows a demonstration list and stores nothing.
Working with the K2700
The LINK
Press LINK to connect. VEKTOR finds the K2700's USB MIDI port by its name and plays on MIDI channel 1: select channel 1 on the K2700. With the LINK on, the patch plays in the K2700's edit buffer and every change is sent as you make it; only the parts that changed travel, so editing stays quick. Press LINK again to disconnect: VEKTOR first releases any notes it was playing.
- K2700 ELSEWHERE: LINK. If you select another program on the K2700, VEKTOR stops sending. Press LINK to send the patch to the K2700 again.
- What travels by itself. The motion, the filters, the effects and the K2700 controls all go with the program; a stored program plays and moves on the K2700 alone, the keymaps being the K2700's own.
- What the app plays while you edit. The SCORE's steps (see SCORE) and the joystick in LIVE.
Which effects you hear
The insert chain plays as you edit, but the reverb sits on the K2700's aux 2, and the K2700 loads its aux effects only when it enters a program. While you edit, it plays the aux effects of the program it was on, and only those of the channel selected on its front panel. So VEKTOR's reverb is heard when:
- the K2700's panel is on channel 1, the LINK's channel (with another channel selected, its program's aux effects serve every channel, and VEKTOR's channel may have no reverb at all);
- the K2700 is on a VEKTOR program stored on it. STORE selects the program it writes; or select one of your VEKTOR programs on the K2700 and press LINK to send the patch into it.
When the LINK connects, VEKTOR reads the program the K2700 is on. If its aux effects are not VEKTOR's, the
display's bottom line alternates with FX OF 4097 … (the program whose effects you hear) and the chain on
its aux 2 (or aux 1), and the FX page names both chains. Once the K2700 is on a VEKTOR program, the FX page reads
AUX FX: VEKTOR'S.
What the K2700 can play
Every combination VEKTOR offers has to fit the K2700: a layer has four function generators (FUNs), and corner A's
layer uses the most. Its weight in the mix takes two, FLAT two more, a small orbit two (one for each axis), and the
mod wheel with the speed envelope one. A change that would need more is refused, and the display says
NOT ON THE K2700: CORNER A NEEDS 5 FUNS. The status line's FUN 2/4 shows how many are in
use.
The K2700's own controls
Each program answers the K2700's panel, so it can be played without the app.
| K2700 | Moves |
|---|---|
| Slider 1, Slider 2 | The point's x and y in LIVE (CC 12 and 13) |
| Mod wheel | The orbit's speed, when MOD WHEEL is on |
| Buttons 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 | EQ, presence, flanger, chorus and delay on or off |
| Sliders 6, 7, 8 | The flanger's, chorus's and delay's amounts |
| Knobs 1 … 4 | The EQ's bass, mid and treble gains and its mid frequency |
| Knobs 6, 7, 8 | The flanger's period, the chorus's rate, the delay's time |
| Pad 1 | The delay's feedback |
The factory programs
64 programs in two halves: 001 … 032 WARM MOTION, warm pads whose point moves by itself while each corner's filter breathes with its own envelope, and 033 … 064 PADS, pads of every kind: glass, ice, choirs, brass, reeds, additive partials, rhythmic gestures, orchestral sections and three on the sliders (LIVE). All 64 can be heard on VEKTOR's page, recorded from the K2700.
Play them with long chords and let the motion unfold: the PATH and ORBIT programs move over several seconds, the SCORE programs follow their tempo, and the LIVE ones wait for Sliders 1 and 2.

The factory programs live in the app and always open as they were made: change one and STORE it on the K2700 to keep your version.
On the Mac
The Mac app is the same panel in a window of its own, with the compiler and the LINK inside it: no browser is needed.
- No sound, no files. The app opens no audio output and keeps nothing on the Mac: the K2700 plays and keeps every program.
- MIDI menu. Choose the MIDI inputs whose Slider 1 and 2 (CC 12, 13) and mod wheel (CC 1) on channel 1 move the point on the panel while the LINK is on. All Sound Off (⌘.) releases the notes the app played and sends All Notes Off and All Sound Off to the K2700.
- Quitting releases every note and switches the LINK off.
In your browser
VEKTOR in your browser is the same panel, compiler and LINK, with nothing to install, and all 64 factory programs. It needs Chrome or Edge on a computer and the K2700 on USB: the page reaches it through Web MIDI, and the browser asks once to allow MIDI with SysEx. Safari and the iPad have no Web MIDI.
- The K2700 keeps your programs. The page keeps nothing: STORE puts a program on the K2700, READ opens it again.
- Closing the page (or switching the LINK off) sends the K2700 note offs, All Notes Off and All Sound Off on channel 1, so no note is left hanging.
- The K2700's sliders and mod wheel move the point and the speed on the page, as in the app.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Check |
|---|---|
| No sound at all | VEKTOR plays through the K2700: the LINK must be on (its light steady) and the K2700 on MIDI channel 1, in Program mode. |
| The LINK does not connect | The USB cable in the K2700's USB COMPUTER port and the K2700 switched on. In the browser: Chrome or Edge, and MIDI allowed for the page. The display says why it failed (for example, no K2700 MIDI port). |
| A program is too loud or too quiet | Turn LEVEL in the header (the whole program's level) and STORE it to keep it; a corner's own LEVEL changes only its share of the mix. For everything at once, the K2700's VOLUME slider. |
| No reverb, or the wrong effects (a delay, another hall) | The K2700 plays the aux effects of the program it is on, and only on the channel its front panel has selected. Select channel 1 on the K2700, then put it on a VEKTOR program stored on it: STORE selects the program it writes, or choose one on the K2700 and press LINK. The display says FX OF … while another program's effects are heard (see Which effects you hear). |
| The display says K2700 ELSEWHERE: LINK | Another program was selected on the K2700. Press LINK to send the patch again. |
| A change is refused: NOT ON THE K2700 | The patch would need more than four FUNs in corner A's layer. Undo something that costs one: FLAT, a smaller orbit, or the wheel and the speed envelope together. |
| MOD WHEEL or SPEED ENV blinks | They move the orbit's speed only: switch MOTION to ORBIT, or switch them off. |
| The point stops moving when I let go of the keys | That is how the K2700 plays it: the point stays where it is during the release. |
| Nothing moves in LIVE | LIVE follows the joystick and the K2700's Sliders 1 and 2: move one of them. |
| A SCORE program stands still on the K2700 | With the LINK on, the app plays the score while VEKTOR is open; a stored SCORE program plays it itself. The score restarts when every key has been let go and you play again. |
| The delay or flanger runs at the wrong speed | They follow the K2700's tempo: set it to 120 BPM, as the factory programs were made. |
| A corner is silent | Its MUTE, another corner's SOLO, a LEVEL far down, or a keymap made for another range: move its TUNE or play elsewhere on the keyboard. |
| READ says NOT A VEKTOR PROGRAM | Only programs that VEKTOR stored can be read back. |
| STORE does nothing | Press it twice: the first press asks, the second (within three seconds) writes. SCAN first, then choose the ID. |
| Notes keep sounding | Switch the LINK off and on, or use All Sound Off (⌘.) in the Mac app. |
